The ADDIE model

The ADDIE model is one of the frameworks that being used to develop systematic training purposes. Many instructional designers, trainers and developers also apply the model to continously make improvement for eLearning courses. The ADDIE model includes five development phases: analyze, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

1. Analysis phase

  • Analyze learners' need
  • Set up course goals and objectives
  • Identify technology/media/software used for teaching
  • Plan time frame and class activities: The lecture duration plan
  • Review syllabus template

2. Design phase

  • Design Canvas course: content structure, interaction and community
  • Commuicate with learners: list assignment samples and welcome message in Canvas
  • Create assessment rubrics or grading criteria clearly for each assignment and exam
  • Plan activities that relate to course objective topics, group interactive activities, and decide what contents and activities should be presented

3. Development phase

  • Facilitate a synchronous classroom: WebEx and/or Blackboard Collaborate

  • Structure course contents: audio, videos, presentation, slides, documents, etc. to help students succeed
  • Ensure all contents are accessible: accessible course content and accessible documents (e..g alt text for images, table headings, and captions for video productions)

4. Implementation phase

  • Plan alternative options for unexpected situations (e.g. Internet disconnected)
  • Provide students additional resources, guidance and consistent information
  • Form an interactive learning environment and encourage students’ engagement with peers and course contents
  • Use emerging technologies as teaching tools to enhance learning and teaching
  • Create announcements topics on Canvas for communication purposes
  • Post virtual office hours
  • Provide meaningful feedback relate to course objectives
  • Respond to students' email within 24-48 hours

5. Evaluation phase

  • Conduct formative assessments
  • Conduct summative assessments
    • Students' learning curve
    • Satisfaction
    • Interaction
    • Community
    • Collaborative learning
    • Communication: instructor-to-students or students-to-students
    • Rubrics
